Dons Outlast Wilson in Dual
CERRITOS, CA - The Dons outlasted Hacienda Heights Wilson at the opening meet of the season at Cerritos High School. The distance team appeared to be very deep at this meet as they took home four of the six races, while 13 of the 18 scoring positions leading to a combined 35-19 advantage by the distance events which was added to by three points earned by Stanley Chang (1:03) in the 400m.
The boys junior varsity mile race made it appear that the race would be a tough one as the Wilson athlete surged past Andrew Shen (5:12), leading to a second and third place finish (Ian Chiang - 5:28). However, the junior varsity boys came back to sweep the 880 yard race behind Andrew Shen (2:23), Timothy Vongphanichith (2:24), and Joshua Suh (2:27). The girls races were combined and the depth of the girls shown through quickly as 12 girls surged under 6:40 during the full mile with seven under 6:16. Jessica Sunio paced the girls to victory in 5:56, while Athalia Magana surged into 3rd in 6:07. In the 800m race, Jessica Sunio (2:40) once again took the win with Christina Alarid taking 3rd for the Dons in 2:48. The boys varsity team saw their 1600m lead erased, however, the Dons took home second and third behind Ryan Poblete (5:07) and Karantej Kohli (5:12). In the 800m, Ivan Juarez took the commanding lead in 2:11 and had Ryan Poblete behind him in third in 2:18. The Dons took home the three victories with scores of BJV 82-40, GV 82-28, and BV 71-47. |
